CARBON FOOTPRINT REPORT
Higher education institutions present themselves as models for societies to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions through education. Universities, each educating
leaders, are in a key position in their initiatives to combat climate change. Today,
many universities have provided leadership to the intellectual community by
joining the Kyoto Protocol and supporting environmental sustainability. Carbon
footprint is one of the most important modules of sustainable development. It can
be defined as the greenhouse gas emissions from activities such as energy
production, waste generation, transportation and consumption. It is usually
calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent in tons. Higher education institutions
have taken initiatives such as neutral carbon campus and green campus by
reducing their carbon footprints. This report has been prepared to reduce the
amount of carbon emissions calculated by considering the consumption data of
Erciyes University campus and calculating carbon footprints and to take initiatives
for a sustainable university.
In the report, the amount of greenhouse
gas emissions emitted into the
atmosphere by Erciyes University in
Kayseri for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019
was calculated using the Greenhouse Gas
Protocol and ISO 14064:2006 directives
and IPCC guidelines. The carbon footprint
was determined for the years 2017, 2018
and 2019 considering the data received
from the relevant units for the natural gas
and electricity consumed at Erciyes
University, the vehicle km method on the
university campus and the amount of
waste generated annually. As a result of
the study, the amount of greenhouse gas
emissions emitted into the atmosphere
was evaluated comprehensively and
recommendations were presented.
